2026 El Niño predicted to be the strongest in 150 years
Climate projections indicate that the upcoming 2026-27 El Niño event might reach record-breaking intensity, potentially becoming the most powerful in almost a century and a half. Climate researcher Zeke Hausfather analyzed 667 ensemble forecasts from 14 top seasonal climate models and noted that this event is likely to outpace the major 1997-98 and 2015-16 episodes, potentially by a degree that has "never been observed" before.
